Be Astonished

One of the most important actions you can ever take is non-action.

My own experience is this requires discipline and clarity, rather than a conquistador mentality. 

It might also require a beautiful and poetic and replicable surrender.

This morning, I attended a Zoom event running out of New York. It focused on Harlem and intergenerational and transgenerational trauma, and offered parallel experiences and insights and modes of treatment and care for individuals whose lives resonated with my own, many many, many years ago. 

It was fabulous to attend. There, on the other side of the world, a small group of individuals were coming together to make change, to speak and to consider the flourishing beauty that lies at the heart of each of us.

For some, that potential for flourishing is buried deep beneath the substrate. Deep beneath those layers. For others, that potential is closer to the surface, so a gentle tap or symbiotic conversation, a kind of "shall we talk?" might be enough to begin the unburdening process. 

Whatever the depth, there is no right or wrong.

While the Zoom discussion this morning focused on Harlem and the surrender into our true humanity, what I was also interested in was the replicated patternings of this type of event all over the world. In a million different places at any one time, individuals are coming together to heal and change, to consider, to enquire about individual and collective capacity for transformation in systemic and integrated ways.

This astonishes me in the most marvellous and wonderful way.

Why?

Because.

Because this expresses the beautiful capacity for hope and change. Human beings do realise - whether consciously or unconsciously, the old order and old guard and old way of living is gone, possibly for good. Death has arrived on our doorstep yet again, and is sweeping away the way of familiar things.

And what will take its place?

This is the cusp and this is the beautiful outer perimeter...where profound change occurs. This is where we make it. Big change, little change, real change, small change, good change, bad change.

Be astonished. Be very astonished.

Be astonished by the beetle and the moth. Be astonished by the bees here on Arapito Farm in their pastel hives. Be astonished by the willow buds in Spring, and the turning gyre. Be astonished by the helical force of nature and the glory and regal majesty of the soil beneath your feet, teeming and alive. Be astonished by your way forward and through, as equal parts of the mystery that comprises your world. Be astonished by a return to the archetypal "garden" and be astonished as the shops close one by one, and the world turns towards some model entirely foreign and entirely new.

Be astonished and even horrified too, as towns go under in flood and fires roar like The Inferno. 

Be astonished. 

Consider. set place. Breathe. Consider some more. Turn to your neighbour.

Make good and clear. Obscure too, especially when fighting with the chimera of the shadow.

Be astonished.

And surrender to win, as they say in 12 step programs...

Be astonished too, when you make a decision to take a new path and do something real and rewarding for your growth and your glittering prize future....

Yes. Be astonished. Be very astonished.

Foster your astonishment as you would tend a new calf, or a kind and sentient plant on the sill, or a new baby in your arms, your child, a growing being, your life, your path, your thing.
