Voicing You

Sep 04, 2022

Early starts yet again, here at home on Arapito Farm.

And the weather is warming!

Just yesterday I was talking with a client in Australia about change and self-transformation and WHAT it actually means.

It can be a beautiful road - with a few bumps here and there for sure, but beautiful all the same. Exquisite, in fact! And the bumps? Well...that's why you're often better placed to travel the path with someone who's already travelled it before you.

Treading it carefully and considerately is important too, and you have to balance this against the need to take risks - which can even mean mistake-making, and/or important lesson-learning.

It's a bit like a child's see saw, or the swing of a beautiful crystal pendulum that catches and rainbows the light coming in from the window.

So what does true change really look like when you come out the other end?

In short, it looks pretty incredible and I speak from experience. And it can also look and feel very different for different people. That's because you claim YOU. You find YOU! So hopefully, you're amazed and intrigued, fascinated even - by the new you and your capacity for meaning-making and reconsideration of the world and your place in it.

It is an amazing PATH.

But while it looks different for each of us, it also has some clear phases and hallmarks that I help you identify and work through in your coaching and your courses and programmes.

One of those is "your voice."

Finding Your Voice

Finding your voice is a very important part of your process. It's a beautiful experience actually!

Have you ever had that sense that you are running dual narratives?

This is a very relevant question, because part of self-transformation and change also often involves finding or reclaiming your lost voice, or the voice that resides within that may lie dormant.

People often talk about an internal narrative (where you might hold things a little closer to your heart,) and an external narrative (where the social words are spoken, the uttered words that comprise the phrases and sentences and paragraphs that make up what you put out into the world.) Women speak of this frequently in the programmes and coaching. The gulf can be small or it can be wide.

What do you do? How do you change this?

So many women (and men too) relegate a large part of life to suppressing what they'd actually like to say - about themselves, their history, their story and their views. Is that you? Can you relate?

You might often relinquish this hidden story, or keep yourself relatively silent, or you might repress your true voice or simply sidestep what you might really need or want to say about who you are and what you are and what you have experienced.

You might even deny parts of your history and what you really feel, because it is sooo painful?

You might just shut down on yourself and sweep it under the carpet too, - that little voice inside that says "you need to finally sort this. You really do. You need to resolve it once and for all so the second half of your life is all that you want it to be."

Of course, as your coach, I'm certainly not advocating you go out into the world and start spilling the beans on every aspect of every negative experience you've ever been through. NO! We need to be really clear on this. Nor am I advocating you speak out with the intention of using words as weapons in an effort to hurt others. NO!

Discernment is essential.

But what often happens is the voice inside you - the one that has not been heard or uttered or voiced, will grow in strength and power as you do.

You might start to assert in little ways here and there, or offer opinions that you are happy with but that may be new for you to express.

You might find favour in articulating your feelings in new ways, and you may have a sense that some authentic and seismic shift is actually taking place within you. It's exciting. And empowering. It feels exhilarating and you can start brimming with joy and greater personal power.

And you may also find you start loving yourself a whole lot more.

That is the great boon or gift. This IS a beautiful payoff. This is your beautiful holy grail. All that hard work. All that change - all that self-transformation and exploration.

What a gift!

It is a very gorgeous experience - to find your own power through the words you speak...to speak truths and opinions and views and values with conviction, underpinned by a deep sense of all you are. You might claim your history - all of it! You might claim the ability to say "no" to certain places and people and experiences. You might also learn to say "yes" - yes to the very realms you've been too afraid to step into because of a deep-seated sense of inadequacy.

It is a very beautiful experience to hold these words and your voice and your being in a way that has meaning for you and therefore for the world around you. It is akin to the opening of a majestic desert rose.

It is spectacular!

But a word of caution...don't always expect those around you to fully understand the gorgeous magnitude of what you have done or are doing on this path.

Your Voice and Relationships

The reason you might want and need support with coaching and/or programmes is because the road can get a little rocky and gritty as you carve your new path in the world - a world sometimes sprinkled with people who may not yet have adjusted to your beautiful internal changes.

Most people are happy for you to change and grow. Most others freaking love it! It is an exciting time and the people who love and support you will champion you along and encourage the flourishing as you build out from the old thinner narrative to a new one that encompasses more of your central truth.  Some may also need a little time to adjust.

Learning to voice from this realm of inner truth is an art and artform - and it's one often learned through trial and error. You want to be strong enough to be centred and contained so you know you are saying what you mean and meaning what you say. Rudimentary first attempts might need a little hand holding.

And that's a very good thing!

You also want to be able to NOT SAY various truths - not because they aren't true or real to you or in alignment with your views, but because doing so can have adverse consequences that may tilt your world just a little too much.

And so you want to learn to distinguish WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU TO SAY AND NOT SAY. I'll repeat that...WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU! Not anyone else. Not anyone else. What is right for you - bearing in mind you are fully versed and aware of any consequences.

Talk this over in the programmes and in coaching.

Work out ways forward. Learn the art of voicing your change through your new voice and the new words you are learning.
