Women and Trauma Healing - Your Heroine's Journey

Every so often, you're inevitably called to take account with life, and when that happens, it can be a little tricky and even a bit tough. Life takes its turns and its twists, and when you're over 45+ and a woman, that can be fairly difficult.

When you're younger, you may be much better equipped to handle these changes, but moving into the second phase of life can mean you want greater certainty, greater security and greater stability.

Here at Camilla Slater, we're big on lived experience support being extended to women and others who have already walked the path of the trauma healing journey. This is vital and important part of the healing journey. Speaking with someone and being guided by someone who has already been on this path for a long time makes a huge difference to self-mastery and transformation, and also fast-tracks you in areas where you may be struggling.

The archetypal journey of the Heroine or Hero is well documented. It's a story of mammoth proportions, with symbolic significance for you and for me and for each and every one of us. Every fable and every story has this archetypal quality, this magnificent richness. This is why stories are central and key to life. To your life.

So...when considering story in relation to your own life process there are some considerations you want to make. And one of these is a clear and resonating question...

How is my own life imbued with the qualities of The Heroine's Journey?

But how?

Do you know how to transform your own life into a Heroine's Journey of such significance that your world is transformed from pain to deep meaning?

When you're an older woman with some degree of trauma in your past, or with any kind of neglect or abandonment, or with attachment issues, this is important. and even though the journey can be a little rockier, it can be fused with limitless meaning that will transform how you view yourself, your past and your own life.

THE LANDSCAPE OF TRAUMA AND PTSD

So what is the actual detail of this journey like? What can you expect and what do you frequently encounter as you move through the terrain that is ageing WITH a trauma or PTSD history?

First and foremost, it's important to note this path is not a naturally neat one. Two steps forward and one step back. You need a map. You need to have navigation tools. And you will likely need lived experience guidance.

If you're not careful you can orbit into circular phases that are repetitive and problematic, and result in little growth and lots of pain. These periods can be like eddies of pain that spiral like whirlpools of water in a fast flowing brook.

You can also have periods of heightened growth and elation, where you assume that trauma symptoms are gone forever! You roll along as if you're on the straight and clear road forever, only to be blindsided a little later down the track when you have a resurgence of symptoms.

PTSD TRIGGERS AND YOUR PATH

If and when this happens, you can tend towards fatalism and a sense of desolation again, as if there is no end in sight and that the resurgence of symptoms is a complete relapse back into chronic PTSD. But this isn't the case! It really isn't.

When you have the right kind of lived experience supports and structures in place that are systemic and holistic, compassionate and wise, you will be supported through these terrains and you will be ok.
